This is a pledge to Vermont voters. Should the plurality of Vermont voters select "Mark Stewart" in 2024 for U.S. Senate, only a referendum among overt supporters to "continue" will keep me there beyond two years. I will happily cede my seat to a highly-likely-to-be-elected-successor who carries my principles but who is BETTER than me.
I already know 9 Vermonters who have my principles and are better than me. I expect there are 900 or more, among them Gerald Malloy, whom I don't yet know well*. Every vocal "anti-school board mom" in VT is better than me. I hope this campaign elevates each of THEM to run for office in 2025. It will not be hard for parties to field candidates to succeed me within 6 months of a declared "resignation", as the VT Constitution calls for.*
It will be EASY to see a better successor PROVIDED my early U.S. Senate service accomplishes some goals:
- Ending mass illegal immigration
- Removing many unconstitutional, unfair, or ineffective federal laws
- Ending use of many federal regulations not voted on by Congress.
- Allowing mature adults to opt out of Social Security
- Allowing Vermonters who use few federal services to opt out of a majority of IRS payments.
- Ending at least SOME Corporate Welfare.
Lest this look audacious...consider this very realistic scenario: an un-telegenic challenger with little money, no prior office, no family pedigree, little speaking ability, and barely over 5' tall who upends a sitting U.S. Senator THEN HAS CLOUT. With my humble ascent, EVERY statist incumbent is on notice to "legislate OUR WAY or you'll get toppled too". My recommended successor will get elected and serve 4 to 10 years, and outside Vermont a bunch of good conservatives and libertarians will gain high notoriety for their goodness.
What will I do in 2026? The same thing! Move to run against an "entrenched" northeast incumbent. We have a lousy U.S. Senator to our east and a hideous governor to our south (I leave the challenge to the equally hideous governor to our west for Larry Sharpe, my favorite civil servant and my hope for President in 2028).
